Hello human, I am Polymini

Polyminis explores the idea of how evolving artificial life could be the heart of a game.

After the original tech demo was published at the 7th International Joint Conference of Computational Intelligence, it was chosen for the prestigious Advanced Game Project program at the University of Southern California and developed into a multiplayer game.

2D Sandbox for emerging behaviors

Polyminis

Project overview

Polyminis was heavily inspired by the works of Karl Sims in the 90’s and video games like Spore and No Man’s Sky. It mainly tries to explore the question – “If academia has been successful at developing systems that evolve behavior and shape of artificial creatures, and games that have strong allegories to evolution and emerging ecosystems are also successful – why not attempt to make a game that leans on those systems?”

It is, at its core, an attempt to capture the amazement and awe you feel when watching a fishbowl or ant farm, or any other emerging phenomena in nature.

I lied when I said I was just chillin’

I’ve been quietly evolving into a seeker of the unknown.

The smart cousin of the Tetris piece

Polyminis uses real artificial intelligence techniques like neuro-evolution and genetic algorithms.

Techniques and ideas that have existed in the 90’s remixed to make them more accessible to a wider audience, through games.

Watch the mighty algorithm evolve these creatures in front of you.

Evolving an idea

Evolving an idea

Polyminis predates revolution solid per se, how it is one of the first moments where those gaps between theory and practice, art, tech and science, became the most apparent and in some way one of the first steps into the current direction.

Polyminis attempted to bring what was back then niche research into the hands of game designers and other game creators.

In a rather poetic twist, the spirit behind Polyminis is the intellectual genetic seed, incomplete and imperfect, on which now we’re iterating throughout the new set of projects and ideas.
